State @ SXSW 2008 – Day Four

Next SXSW, State plans to split itself into at least three people. ‘Getting the hang of it’ is bittersweet: you have the element of pride in your achievement when you’ve finally mastered your way around the downtown venues, can judge the distances between them and plan an effective assault on the evening’s entertainment; the downside is that you get the feeling you’ve missed so much during the learning process, if only you could spool back with the knowledge you have now.

Today was the day that State remembered to eat. For all that people rave about the amount of ‘choice’ available in America, and legendary status of this country’s gargantuan portions, Austin is a city where you really have to search for a decent breakfast.

Poor Rollie Pemberton. The last time he came to Dublin for the Go! Team Tripod gig he missed his flight. This time between himself and his DJ, Weasel, they arrived without a mixer and a bag of records thanks to a certain economical air fares company.

Dan le Sac vs Scroobius Pip, Crawdaddy, Dublin

It’s midnight on a Friday in Dublin. Outside our chosen venue, Crawdaddy, a canopy shields the huddled smokers from the rain. Inside, it’s a warmer affair as a sold-out crowd await the return of Dan le Sac vs Scroobius Pip by getting sloshed and dancing to Kraftwerk. It’s the Essex duo’s third gig in Dublin in five months despite having only released two official singles on Lex Records and an internet-only Christmas release weeks previous.
