A Month In: A Month In…Hip-Hop

With thanks to the Heineken Live Project, A$AP Rocky (pictured) is coming to the Academy on May 24th. The Harlem born MC released his debut album LongLiveA$AP, produced by Hitboy and Casino, to critical acclaim and has since toured with Kendrick Lamar, was the opening act for Drake, played the Pitchfork Music Festival and has performed with Rihanna and Lana Del Ray. Free tickets are available for the Dublin gig on April 29th from Heineken Music.

Along with promoting her album, producing an upcoming film Inevitable Defeat New York’s first lady of soul, Alicia Keys has just been named the global creative director of Blackberry. Swiss Beats Mrs will work with app developers, technology boffins and her mates in the entertainment industry to help shape and enhance the new Blackberry 10. “I have been using the BlackBerry 10 for a few weeks now. I know the potential this platform has to help creative people be more productive, and help productive people be more creative” says Keys. Cynics might say this is a marketing ploy by Blackberry as they continue to be outsold by iPhone, but let’s give them the benefit of the doubt for now.

Rapper Joe Budden has brought back the message “just say no to drugs, kids”. In a recent interview Joe described his experience with a drug called Molly which is thought to be a ‘pure’ kind of Ecstacy. “I didn’t see a problem with the fact that maybe five days would go by without sleeping or with the fact that I was hallucinating at times he said. The drug, which has been doing the rounds in clubs in the States for years now has become the drug of choice again due to recent shout outs about it in tracks by artists like Wale and Kanye West. Budden, now drug free, went on to say. “Now everyone is speaking about Molly like it’s the thing to do,” “I thought it was important for somebody to stand up and say, ‘you know, I did that, it’s corny.”

A warning for the promoters of Lil Wayne’s up coming gig at the O2 – don’t piss him off and watch out for his skateboard!. It appears that Weezy is in legal trouble again as a promoter called Alfredo Mario is preparing to sue him for assault with a skateboard. According to LA weekly, Lil Wayne’s entourage were unhappy when Mario asked for a photo with Wayne. He also claims that Weezy rolled up on a skateboard and said “alright motherfucker, you want to take a picture like a groupie? Like a little bitch?” Following an exchange one of Wayne’s entourage picked up a skateboard and hit him over the head with it, knocking him unconscious. This isn’t the first time the rapper’s entourage has been accused of assault. Last year, Weezy’s bodyguards were accused of attacking a photographer while the rapper was skating.

The new single by South African MC Rival-Ace, ‘Best Of The Best’ featuring Kay Soul is available now to download for free. It is taken from the up-coming ‘Forever ILL’ EP which is produced by his long time collaborator Evo Canevo. Also watch this space for a full length album by Rival released through new Dublin based label Vital Force.
