An interview with Catscars

Kindly taking time out from recording with Children Under Hoof, we grabbed a quick chat with Robyn from Catscars right before her DJ debut at the third State Social.

What are you expecting from the State Social?
Lots of good tunes and dancing.

What kind of music will you playing?
Upbeat, dark, dancey, retro, similar adjectives..

Will you be playing any of your own tracks?
That would be a little self indulgent I think.. I could get Patrick to. [laughs]

Have you DJed much?
I have never DJed and it’s something I have wanted to try out so I’m looking forward to the night.

Can you give us a teaser of what tracks you might play?
Hmm well, Hercules and Love Affair – ‘Blind’, Felix Da Housecat – ‘Ready 2 Wear’…

What is your guaranteed floor filler?
I reckon The Knife should do it.

If no one is dancing, what will you do?
Cry, but hopefully that wont happen.

Ever cleared a dancefloor?
No but I have certainly left dancefloors, Prince’s ‘1999’ comes on and I’m outta there.

Are there any tracks you will never ever play?
Of course, loads, anything Drum and Bassey for a start.

Most embarrassing record in your collections?
Ha, it’s gotta be Shakira Laundry Service. Is that even valid?

Guilty pleasures?
I dug out The Frames’ Fitzcarraldo the other day, reminds me of being a moody teenager so I feel guilty listening to and enjoying that.

Most pretenious record you own?
I dunno, Bauhaus maybe.

First single and album you ever bought?
First single was ‘I’m Just A Girl’ by No Doubt and first album was PJ Harvey’s Stories from The City, Stories From The Sea.

Latest single and album bought?
Latest was Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark – ‘La Femme Accident’, but I haven’t listened to it yet. The last album I bought was a three disc New Wave compilation.

If State readers comment below with requests, would you consider ’em?
Sure, the madder the better please.

The State Social #3 takes place on Wednesday, 31 March in our new home The Mezz in Twisted Pepper, Abbey Street, Dublin 1. Featuring DJ sets from Patrick Kelleher, Catscars, Nialler and Loreana Rushe. From 11pm. Free entry.
