Incoming: Aslan

Who are your favourite artists from your hometown?

I really like Kodaline and Villagers. Great live bands with great songs.

What’s it really like touring?

Great, I love being on the road. You get to visit a lot of places you would not normally get to. Aslan have toured the US, Australia and Europe. Would love to tour Japan or China.

Tell us a tour story…

One time I broke my ankle and was on crutches. So we are at the venue about to go on stage and the band set up a stool for me to sit on. They said, Billy, you go out first and get ready and when you’re ready give us the nod and we will follow you out. But they didn’t, they left me there looking at a packed venue for what seemed like an eternity. Not funny at the time but funny now.

What’s your favourite city/town/venue to play?

Dublin, and it’s a toss up between Vicar St and The Olympia. We recorded our Made In Dublin album in Vicar St so that venue might just be my favourite.

What has been your biggest achievement of 2016 so far?

Biggest achievement has to be the fact that we are back gigging. Christy, our singer, has cancer and I never thought we would gig again. So just to be playing again is great. Long may it continue.

What was the worst piece of advice you were given?

We were advised not to record a live album by people in the music industry as they said live albums don’t sell. We ignored the advice and recorded Made in Dublin over five nights in Vicar St. It went on to be our biggest selling album to date.

What do you do to relax?

Spend time with the family .

What are you reading?

I’m not a great reader, sorry.

How about TV, anything good on the box?

Love Game of Thrones at the moment and it’s great it is filmed in Ireland.

Do you have a favourite YouTube video?

Yes, my son Jake plays in a band called The Valves and I love when they put up videos on youtube. It’s great now that young bands can do it for themselves and get their music out there.

What is your favourite:

Record of the moment?

‘Hold back the river’ James Bay.

Song of the moment?

The new song Aslan are working on at the moment.

Lost classic song?

‘Nothing Rhymed’ by Gilbert O Sullivan; we covered it on our Uncase’d album.

Record Label?

Our Label Watergrasshill.

A new artist that you are most excited about?

A young band from Bettystown, The Valves.

What was the last great gig you went to?

Kodaline at the Olympia last year.

Worst show ever?

We were doing a festival in Dubai and The Happy Monday’s were on. Shaun Ryder was not in a good place and they were really bad.

What should we expect from your Leopardstown show?

This, I think, is our 3rd time playing Bulmers at Lepordstown. So the crowd know what to expect from us. It’s gonna be one big sing song, so if you’re going to the gig please bring your voices!

Aslan play Bulmers Live at Leopardstown on June 9th and tickets can be found here.
