What do you get if you put some of Dublin’s finest musicians and songwriters together in one supergroup? No, this is not the set up for a bad punchline. The answer is Autre Monde, the latest Irish musical ensemble to get excited who are from the offset far from a joke.
Comprised of Paddy Hanna on vocals, Mark Chester (Ginnels), Padraig Cooney (Land Lovers), and Eoghan O’Brien (No Monster Club), Autre Monde bring something interesting to the project with influences of their previous work sprinkled throughout their debut offering. They have been writing fun island suitable pop songs which they recorded with Daniel Fox of Girl Band over the last few months and now they are ready to unleash the fruits of their labour.
They have just shared ‘Customs’, their debut single which gradually erupts with jangly guitar, Hanna’s distinct vocal which moves effortlessly from a sultry sophistication to a playful cascading of spontaneous notes. If you notice traces of Television, Suicide, John Cale and Pere Ubu in this track and their forthcoming releases that is because those were the bands and artists that were steadfast touchstones for Autre Monde as they developed their sound.
