It’s that time again. It’s the most wonderful time of the week. It’s beginning to look a lot like… Release Day! Once again, there is a feast of new albums being brought to our metaphorical musical buffet. The Rolling Stones and Pete Doherty’s latest albums will be considered by State’s esteemed writers in the coming days, in the meantime however, here’s a run through of who released what today.
Jean-Michel Jarre – Oxygène 3 (Sony)
French composer, Jean-Michel Jarre is renowned for given depth to his ambient compositions by adding layers to his music with both sound and visual dimensions. It has been an exceptionally busy year for the sixty-eight year old, he released his eighth studio album Electronica 2: The Heart of Noise in May, he has been and continues touring across Europe, announced a collaboration with Gorillaz and today he shares his ninth studio album, Oxygène 3 on the fortieth anniversary of Oxygène’s original release. That’s an impressive mountain of work to achieve in twelve months.
Childish Gambino – Awaken, My Love! (Glassnote Records)
Donald Glover channels his social commentary in a myriad of mediums. He has gone from being one of the writers of 30 Rock to starring in a spin-off Star Wars movie based on Hans Solo, which will be in cinemas in 2018. In 2009, he released his first mixtape as Childish Gambino, his moniker as a Hip Hop artist. Seven years have passed and he has put out his third album, Awaken, My Love! which has garnered much excitement amongst his fans online in the last couple of days. The album features a song, ‘Riot’ which Glover wrote with funk legend George Clinton. Suffice to say, this is definitely an album to check out this weekend.
deadmau5 – W:/2016Album (mau5trap)
This time last year Joel Zimmerman typed a shocking tweet, “meh. considering killing off the “deadmau5″ bullsh** and just start something new. did it before, can do it again. f*** it. why not.” He didn’t, instead he has released W:/2016Album, an album described by the producer/dj as having “an 80’s sci-fi, fantasy vibe.” This is Zimmerman’s eighth studio album as deadmau5, one that he has openly claimed to not be entirely happy with but that admission has not stopped him from commencing work on a follow up album. Perhaps it is time for him to put down the ‘Three Pound Chicken Wing’, hang up his mouse ears and know when too much cheese is enough.
John Legend – Darkness and Light (Columbia)
John Legend has been working on Darkness and Light over a two year period, and as you would expect with a musician of his status there are several heavy-weight pop songwriters and high profile performers featured throughout the twelve songs. Chance the Rapper, Brittany Howard (Alabama Shakes) and Miguel make appearances on the album, and Legend enlisted the help of Julia Michaels, Francis White and John Ryan whom have collectively worked with Britney Spears, Gwen Stefani, Pitbull, Adele and Tom Odell. With this in mind there is sure to be more than one radio friendly single.
