Currently celebrating 35 years, CMJ Music Marathon takes over almost every music venue across Manhattan and Brooklyn for the next five days with countless shows and a line up in the hundreds that can be both exciting and overwhelming at the same time.
We’ve pulled together a small list of our top picks that we’re looking forward to seeing, with a full report coming at the end of the week. Most bands play multiple shows throughout the festival, and as with any of these types of events it’s just as fun to leave some things to chance, jumping between the Lower East Side and Brooklyn for the week there should be a few surprises.
Lorely Rodriguez released her debut album Me just over a month ago – a personal album that hits on synth pop perfectly. This isn’t her first CMJ, but with her progress over the past two years it should be an assured and energetic performance.
Toronto four piece Weaves are hard to pin down, their sound mixes and bends with a bunch of different genres which should make for an interesting live experience.
Rejjie Snow is one of many Irish acts in town, bringing his considered downtempo rap to the festival.
Starting very much as a bedroom artist, Oscar Scheller signed to Wichita Recordings this year. Oscar’s appeal is through the unabashed simplicity of his songs. His second EP ‘Beautiful Words’ was released in June of this year – catchy British romantic pop.
This London quartet have turned quite a few heads over the past few months, with dark and fuzzy guitars paired with sweet vocals. The band’s latest track ‘Nothing Without You’ has been just in time for the festival, CMJ will be their first US performance.
