Music Is My Radar: GodKnows

Responsible for one of last year’s most outstanding Irish albums, GodKnows and producer mynameisjOhn have laid their duo to rest for now, bringing fellow rapper MuRli into the fold to form Rusangano Family. The trio play the Workman’s Club in Dublin on March 20th, with support from Deviant & Naive Ted.

We asked the MC to put a five track playlist together for us and, as you might expect, it’s a thing of great style and beauty.

MuRli – ‘Strangerphobia’ (ft. Steve Hanks on sax) [Prod Naive Ted]

This is from my brother MuRli’s debut Surface Tension which came out just last month in January. The production on this one is by the uncompromising Naive Ted. This bass is just wild and the way MuRli flows is bannans.

Windings – ‘Bladerubber’ (Auxiliary Phoenix Remix)

My favourite band from Limerick and just great folk in general. I loved this remix it had me singing the (infectious) chorus for weeks. The beat was incredible. So well produced. I found myself rapping imaginary lyrics I made up on the spot.

Kendrick Lamar – ‘The Blacker The Berry’

I loved the positive message of the more chilled K.Dot on ‘i’, but I just adore how gully the truth sounds on this. I had the ‘this is what we all wanted feeling’ everyone’s raving about. I’ve been walking around doing the Mean Face in my kitchen ever since I heard it.

Skepta – ‘#That’s Not Me’

My anthem for 2014 and it still has me going nuts. The combination of his confident delivery and the raw honesty of the lyrics ‘True I used to look like you but dressing like a mess no that’s not me’ always gets to me.

Cde Chinx Chingaira – ‘Ngorimba’

This one is old but gold, and forever on my playlist. Ngorimba is powered by dual mbiras, played by Robert and Thomas Ndadziira, as well as a thumping bass line. This song was a hit, one that still has us all dancing at family reunions. It’s one of my favourite songs from Zimbabwe, by one of my biggest inspirations my Uncle Chinx.
