Interview: Incoming: Admiral Fallow

Who are you and where are you from?
Louis Abbott from Admiral Fallow. Originally from Edinburgh but living in Glasgow.

Who are your favourite artists from home?
Three Blind Wolves. Olympic Swimmers. Rachel Sermanni.

What’s it really like touring?
Grand highs and miserable lows sometimes within minutes of each other. I’ll never moan about it though. I feel very lucky to call it a job.

What’s your favourite city/town/venue to play?
I find a great gig is more dependant on the relationship between crowd and band than where it is in the world. If everyone is in a good mood and up for listening it’ll be great. We once played to around 25 people in New Jersey but it was brilliant because people were attentive and got involved with no inhibitions. That said, all the shows we’ve done in Ireland have been brilliant.

What’s your ideal festival line-up?
Guns N Roses. All day and all night.

What has been your biggest achievement of the year?
While the calendar year is young I’m excited about the fact we’ve begun work on a new set of songs which may well become a new album. We went away for a few days and wrote all together for the first time. If you meant within the last year, headlining the Barrowland Ballroom in Glasgow was a big deal for us.

What was the worst piece of advice you were given?
To put money on Hibs winning the Scottish Cup.

What do you do to relax?
Whisky in a sauna. Only did it once but it was good.

What are you reading?
Lowside Of The Road: A Life Of Tom Waits by Barney Hoskyns

How about TV, anything good on the box?
I actually recorded all 15 seasons of ER. It’s taken me about two years to watch them all. I used to watch it as a kid. Season 1 of Homeland was great but 2 was a bit pish. I’m not confident I’ll ever love anything as much as I do The Sopranos.

Do you have a favourite YouTube video?
I can never really remember any off the cuff. I’m the same with jokes. I hear them, laugh a lot, then forget them straight away. Robbie Wllliams getting pushed off stage is pretty funny. Sorry Rob.

What website do you visit most?
The BBC website is good for Sport, Iplayer etc. I listen back to a show or two on BBC6Music when I’m doing the dishes. Guy Garvey’s show is great.

What is your favourite..

Of all time? too hard. Right now, Lau’s Race The Loser.

Again, right now, Heidi Talbot (feat. King Creosote) – ‘Button Up’

Who is your favourite current artist?
I saw Martha Wainwright the other night. She only did five songs but it was enough to make me want to buy her new record. She did a song about being a mother that was beautiful.

What was the last great gig you have seen?
Jumped the gun. Mentioned Martha already.

What should we expect from your Irish shows?
A bunch of songs from our two albums and if your lucky (and we’re ready) maybe something brand new.

Admiral Fallow play the Academy 2 on February 15th.
