Califonian psych folkster Alela Diane released her third album Alela Diane & Wild Divine earlier this year. You might have caught her supporting Bon Iver a couple of years back, and now Alela returns to Dublin’s Crawdaddy on Sunday, October 2nd with support from Cian Nugent. Tickets are priced at €15 available from Ticketmaster. We have three pairs of passes up for grabs, send a mail to email@example.com with your contact details and if you’re in luck we’ll be in touch.
Who are you and where are you from?
I am Alela Diane, originally from Nevada City, California, settled in Portland, Oregon.
Who are your favorite artists from home?
What’s it really like touring?
It’s exhausting, adventurous, and not glamorous at all. It is sitting in a van for 7 hours everyday, and being sleep deprived, and eating weird food. It is also magical, and unexpected, and rewarding.
What’s your favourite city/town/venue to play?
I love La Cigale in Paris, France. It is the perfect venue.
Sweaty club gig versus festival appearance?
It depends on the festival. If it’s outdoors, the audience is comfortable, and the sound is good, I’d prefer a festival.
What’s your ideal festival line-up?
That’s tough. But, since you didn’t specify a year, I’ll say that it’s 1975 and I get to see Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Jefferson Airplane, and Fleetwood Mac and I am watching from side-stage because I can’t tolerate crowds…
Tell us a tour story.
A few years back, we were touring in Portugal and had a day off. We went to the bottom of a cavern full of crystals, and then to the ruins of an old castle on the highest hill in one day.
What has been your biggest achievement of the year?
Wow, probably getting our house organized. It takes a lot of time, effort, and energy to put everything in it’s place!
What do you do to relax?
I have a hard time with relaxing. I just don’t let myself slow down…. but, I love going on walks, and in an ideal world, I’d walk everyday, and I would feel much more relaxed.
What are you reading?
I’ve been reading a book of short stories by Carson McCullers.
How about TV, anything good on the box?
We don’t have a TV, but I do watch netflix on the computer… and when I do, I prefer old westerns. I love Robert Redford, and Paul Newman in the olden days.
Do you have a favourite YouTube video?
I very much appreciate that Japanese cat named “Maru”.
What is your favourite,
– record: I love Townes Van Zandt‘s first record.
– song: Not of all time, but right now I’ve really been digging on ‘After Midnight’ by JJ Cale.
– record label: Rough Trade, but I’m biased.
Who is your favourite current artist?
Of my contemporaries, I’d say I feel the strongest about what Fleet Foxes have been doing.
A new artist that you are most excited about?
What was the last great gig you have seen?
My husband, Tom’s band, DENVER, recently played in Portland, and they are amazing.
What should we expect from your Irish shows?
I’ll be over there with a full band, but we’ll be playing new and old songs alike.
