Incoming: Benjamin Francis Leftwich

Having just released his debut album, Last Smoke Before The Snowstorm – ten folk songs showcasing an elegant and fragile vocal, simple guitar lines and delicate melodies – UK singer-songwriter Benjamin Francis Leftwich will return to Ireland, playing Roisin Dubh in Galway with Fionn Regan on Sunday 17th and Upstairs in Whelan’s on Wednesday 20th.

Who are you and where are you from?

My name is Ben Leftwich and I’m from York, the capital of England.

What’s happening in York?

York has a lot of things happening… there’s lots of music stuff going on! There’s some cool music venues and a lot of gigs on which is good. There’s lots of good open mic nights as well and loads of good musicians.

Who are your favorite artists from home?

The Sorry Kisses are a great band from York, Hayley sings on some of my songs as well. Also, David Ward Maclean is an amazing songwriter… you should check it out…

What’s it really like touring?

It’s awsome. It’s great to wake up in a different city everyday, it’s always an adventure…

What’s your favourite city/town/venue to play?

My favourite venue is Deaf Institute in Manchester, it’s a really cool vibey venue and the backstage is like a little flat. very cool.

Small sweaty club gig versus festival appearance?

Small sweaty club always. love the vibe.

What’s your ideal festival line-up?

Jay-Z, Bruce Springsteen, Sigur Ros……

Last time we came over to Ireland I got the highest ever score on the big game hunting arcade machine on the ferry….

What are you reading?

Midnights Children by Salman Rushdie… it’s an amazing book, all about India… but it’s written in a really trippy way….

How about TV, anything good on the box?

Loving 24 and Prison Break!

What should we expect from your Dublin show?

I’m just going to be playing acoustic guitars by myself. Very laid back vibe….
