Interview: Incoming – Caitlin Rose

Who are you and where are you from?

Caitlin Rose. I am from Nashville, TN.

Who are your favorite artists from home?

There’s a lot: Tristen, Andrew Combs, Rayland Baxter, Derek Hoke and lots of others. It’s a music town.

What’s it really like touring?

Everyone has a different answer to this. There’s a lot of ups and downs … I don’t know if my natural state is something so in motion, but I am OK at adapting and there is a lot of that. I’ve never nailed down a good routine on the road. That would probably help.

What’s your favourite city/town/venue to play?

I’d like to play in Paris again. And Hamburg. NYC is always a good time. I’m no good at favourites.

What’s your ideal festival line-up?

Off the top of my head … could be Neil Young, Pulp, Kate Bush, the National, Richard Hawley, Bonnie Prince Billy, Janelle Monáe … Then something super wild and wonderful like a Life Without Buildings reunion.

Tell us a tour story…

Drinking in a Turkish bar in Munich where a woman made me get up on the bar and then poured water all over me.

What has been your biggest achievement of the year?

I don’t think I’ve had one. I’m moving into a new house soon. When I get home I’ll feel pretty good about that.

What was the worst piece of advice you were given?

There’s so much of it. I rarely take advice. I get talked into things a lot though.

What do you do to relax?

I shut up.

What are you reading?

My People’s Waltz by Dale Ray Phillips and some W.H. Auden.

How about TV, anything good on the box?

Orange Is the New Blackwas great. As was House of Cards. The Netflix original stuff has all been great. Just waiting on The Walking Dead and also Nashville on ABC.

Do you have a favourite YouTube video?

Right now it’s footage from 1959’s ‘400 Blows’ set to the National’s ‘This Is the Last Time’ off their latest. I don’t know how someone thought of that, but it works well. Also this one with Lauren Bacall (below) … and keyboard cat.

What website do you visit most? (discounting email, etc.) is great. I’m always looking up lyrics, but commenters blatantly projecting their lives onto the songs is super fascinating. On a good note, it shows how much listeners identify with the music or at least how far they go in trying to dissect it all.

What is your favourite…

Willie Nelson’s Stardust.

‘You Are My Sunshine’.

Lost classic song?

‘Dark Moon’. Bonnie Guitar does a great one.

Record label?

I don’t have a favorite record label.

Who is your favourite current artist?

Cass McCombs is wonderful.

A new artist that you are most excited about?

Daniel Romano is great. We did a tour some months back. Majical Cloudz’s Impersonator is one I listen to a lot.

What was the last great gig you have seen?

GIRLS at the Mercy Lounge in Nashville is one of the best gigs I’ve ever seen. That was a while ago. I can’t think of a super recent show.

Worst show?

Of mine? I was so ill at a show in Brussels I had to walk off stage after five or six songs. One of the attendants started telling everyone walking out that it was because I was unimpressed with the audience.

What should we expect from your Irish shows?

About an hour of music. Some jokes. Some mumbling.

Caitlin Rose plays Whelan’s this Sunday, 8th September. Tickets cost €16.50 and are on sale now.
