Interview: Incoming: Egyptian Hip Hop

Who are you and where are you from?

We’re Egyptian Hip Hop and we’re Manchester based rock n roll kinda guys.

Who are your favourite artists from your hometown?

Temple Songs, Gnod, G R E A T W A V E S, Part Wild Horses Mane On Both Sides, Waiters, Sex Hands, Desmadrados Soldados De Ventura, Irma Vep, Weird Era, Dutch Uncles.

What’s it really like touring?

It’s like sitting in your van going down roads with your friends every day knowing that you have something to do at the end of the journey. Sometimes your friends can start to be unfriendly but if that carries on the whole thing explodes so usually everyone calms down and are friends again soon after. Sometimes you watch a film together and quote it for a few days, or sometimes it’s a TV series. Sometimes you have Slipknot sessions.

What’s your favourite city/town/venue to play?

No favourite city / town / venue but favourite country = France. We usually feel pretty comfortable when playing around Manchester, I remember really enjoying playing in Amsterdam too. Hopefully Ireland will become our favourite country to play!

What’s your ideal festival line-up?

Perhaps the ideal festival would have to subvert the norm of line ups and genre specific stages. Maybe it would have to be a big continuous jam featuring all of the worlds best musicians, for as long as possible. Or maybe it would just be Connan MOCKASIN, Terry Riley, Meredith Monk, Boredoms, The Knife, Iasos, Ramata Diakite, Burzum, Psychic TV, King Crimson circa Discipline, Talking Heads circa Remain In Light and a fucking huge bunch of others.

Tell us a tour story…

One time our friend Boog Scrooner ate a huge french beetle in a baguette with ketchup and then thought it would be fine to eat other bugs later on in the year but eventually he threw up from eating a cricket and was pretty upset in general.

What has been your biggest achievement of the last year?

Releasing our album has been a great trial for us and we’ve learnt so much from that. It’s been a huge relief to finally get it out there.

What do you do to relax?

Eating amazing food and watching the occasional X Files is a nice way to zone out.

What are you reading?

Prince’s biography has been a great read so far, such an interesting character and so much unreleased music hidden away!

How about TV, anything good on the box?

I watch TV shows on the Internet but not much live. Limmy’s Show is one of the funniest things ive seen for quite a while now.

What’s the last thing you bought online?

Probably a little compression unit, it sounds amazing, its a bit of a secret weapon for great snares.

Who would you most like to collaborate with if you got the chance?

Neville Lawrence AKA Superstar and star has been a dream collaborator of ours for ages now. He’s got such a unique passion for music and video.

What is the worst cover your band has ever performed?

Probably the theme from ‘Greatest Freak Out Ever 4’

Have you ever trashed your equipment? When and why?

No and because we don’t have the money to.

Egyptian Hip Hop play the Grand Social in Dublin on Thursday 28th
