Who are you and where are you from?
Spies are Michael, Jeff and Neil from Dundrum, Hugh from Rathfarnham and Conor from Glasnevin (cue only Northsider joke!). Conor is humbly representing SPIES for the purpose of this interview.
Who are your favorite artists from home?
Oooh, got a lot here. Firstly gotta shout out to our boys Tandem Felix, PolyGlove, Myles Manley, Paddy Hanna, Cal Folger Day. Also O Sister who are supporting us in Whelans. They haven’t put out anything yet but they are going to be special. Other Creatures gotta get a shout. We Cut Corners who killed it in Vicar street of late. O Emperor with their new Lizard EP. Also I really like Otherkin’s latest single. You know, the usuals.
What’s it really like touring?
Great! Touring is pretty much the best thing you can do as a band. Stress levels tend to vary depending on where you are and how you are traveling, for example getting on the Tube to a venue in London with four guitars, two pedals boards and drum breakables in rush hour isn’t much fun. Driving to Galway and staying in the Roisin apartment is loads of fun. You take the rough with the smooth I guess.
What’s your favourite city/town/venue to play?
I think we are slightly biased towards Moscow, and MasterSkya in particular. We played there two weeks back and the crowd were absolutely amazing, super responsive and really appreciative. Moscow in general is an amazing city, a lot of falling in love goes down over there.
What’s your ideal festival line-up?
Hendrix, Marty Robbins, The Beatles, Everly Brothers, Modern Lovers, Joanna Newsom, Donna Summer, George McCrae
What has been your biggest achievement of the year?
Running 5km in 24 minutes. Including a stretch up Gardiner street which for those of you who don’t know, is a very steep hill.
What was the worst piece of advice you were given?
“Don’t worry about it” or “try not to think about it”. Least helpful thing anyone can ever say. Or when you loose something and people ask “where did you last see/have it”
What do you do to relax?
Eat some Bo Bun Hue followed by a creamy Guinness with my buddies.
What are you reading?
How about TV, anything good on the box?
New series of Game of Thrones will be good, Jeff and Michael love House of Cards, also partial to a bit of The walking dead for my sins.
Do you have a favourite YouTube video?
What website do you visit most?
Ah good oul Nialler9 has me fairly hooked. Also 1000+ coffees is always good for a bit light reading while Goldbricking at work.
What is your favourite:
Record? Varies week to week, This week I’m really into that O Emperor Lizard EP, especially the first track The Sky is your Oyster
Song? Wine and Roses by Andy Williams
Lost classic song? Whitebox Stereo- Luke Abbot
Record label? Coral put out some major jams back in the day. As did Columbia , Roulette too.
Who is your favourite current artist?
A new artist that you are most excited about?
Great new group from the UK called Dream Wife who I reckon are destined for big things. Think the Slits meet LCD Soundsystem
What was the last great gig you have seen?
James Vincent McMorrow was incredible at the Choice awards, very moving. He only played three songs but had the whole crowd in his pocket by the end of it.
Dylan in the O2 a few years back, jeez that was a waste of time.
What should we expect from your Irish shows?
Michael talking awkwardly to the crowd in between songs. Neil giving it loads, Jeff throwing major shapes on the kit. Me looking really nervously at the crowd for the first two songs and Hugh slapping some funk.
Spies play in Whelans in Dublin on April 8th. Tickets are available here.
