Interview: Incoming….Fuck Buttons

Who are you and where are you from?

We are Fuck Buttons from Worcester growing up, and who live in London as adults (Benjamin John Power)

Who are your favourite artists from your hometown?

Mike Paradinas who runs the Planet Mu label is from Worcester. Also, Edward Elgar (BP)

I would have liked to have seen Murder of Rosa Luxemburg before they split (Andrew Hung)

What’s it really like touring?

Not as debauched as most people’s Mother would think (BP)

I don’t see it so much as touring, more… a way of life. Seriously though, I enjoy the regime of it; it feels wholesome in a way. (AH)

What’s your favourite city/town/venue to play?

Dublin! (BP)

Botanique in Brussels, and Luminaire (RIP) in London (AH)

What’s your ideal festival line-up?

Tangerine Dream, Ennio Morricone, Jean Michel Jarre, Roedelius, Delia & Gavin, Tim Hecker, Vatican Shadow, The Caretaker, Mika Vainio. Something like that (BP)

I’d love to go to a festival that consisted of all the Detroit Techno lot like Underground Resistance, Jeff Mills, Carl Craig, Dopplereffekt etc.. pummelling, relentless and completely disorientating. I’m really hoping Boards of Canada start playing out live (AH)

Tell us a tour story…

This is more of a festival story, but we were on tour. At one ATP in New York, Kutschers, a young man came up to me and told me that my music had changed his life. He told me his name and when I told him my name “Ben” he gave a confused look and walked off without saying much else. He came back to me after an hour or so and asked me why I was trying to fuck with him and why I had given him a false name. It later transpired that he thought he was talking to Richard D. James (BP)

What has been your biggest achievement of the last year?

It would have to be our involvement in the London 2012 Olympics opening ceremony (BP)

What do you do to relax?

Relax? Not sure I understand what you mean (BP)

Read comics. Painting. Watch massive blockbuster films. (AH)

What are you reading?

The Silence of the Lambs – Thomas Harris, Promethea – Alan Moore, JH Williams III and Mick Gray. I’m about to revisit the Hate comics by Peter Bagge too; that stuff is outrageous. (AH)

How about TV, anything good on the box?

I recently enjoyed ‘Black Mirror’ (BP)

I’m pretty sure I’ve seen every episode of Come Dine with Me now. (AH)

What’s the last thing you bought online?

Nothing interesting. Some patch leads. Yawn (BP)

I bought a bum bag actually. I don’t wear them around my arse though, more like shoulder bags. Very handy for getting stuff out quickly. (AH)

Who would you most like to collaborate with if you got the chance?

The London Philharmonic Orchestra (BP)

Kate Bush (AH)

What is the worst cover you’ve ever performed?

We’ve not performed any covers live before, but it does make me lose a little bit of my mind when Andy plays the John Williams ‘Jurassic Park’ theme music during practice (BP)

Ben does a really good rendition of ‘Parklife’ on his guitar, singing an’ all. (AH)

Have you ever trashed your equipment? When and why?

I used to use the inside of a washing mashing in our live sets. I trashed it because it sounded good (BP)

We had a gig once where I recreated the Jimi Hendrix burning of his guitar onstage, whereby I kneeled on the floor like a shaman, setting alight to my little toy Casio keyboard. (AH)

What website do you visit most?

Wetransfer.com (BP)

I’ve gone a bit mental with apps recently so I’m always checking this website for apps that have gone cheapo. (AH)

What is your favourite……album of the last year?

Holly Herndon – Movement (BP)

I liked Jessie Ware’s album last year. And Julia Holter’s was good too. (AH)

…Song?

Ever? Tough one. At the moment it’s a tie Between Ennio Morricone – ‘L’arena’ and Debussy’s ‘Clare de Lune’ (BP)

Jurassic Park by John Williams (AH)

….Lost classic song?

Erik Satie ‘Trois Sonneries de la Rose’ (BP)

I still listen to Sinead O’ Connor’s version of ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’, relatively often. (AH)

… Record label?

PAN/ SOFTWARE/ Raster Noton (BP)

Raster Noton. Border Community (AH)

…current artist?

Oneohtrix Point Never/ Haxan Cloak/ HTRK/ Helm (BP)

Luke Abbott (AH)

…wYouTube video?

A new artist that you are most excited about?

Roly Porter (BP)

What was the last great gig you went to?

Mika Vainio supporting Chris & Cosey @ Heaven, London (BP)

Swans at Koko (AH)

What should we expect from your Body and Soul slot?

Hopefully we’ll all have a lot of fun and nothing will malfunction (BP)

An incredible time. (AH)
