Interview: Incoming: Lewis Watson

Who are you and where are you from?

I’m Lewis Watson and I’m from Oxford.

Who are your favourite artists from home?

Foals are from Oxford and I love them, also a few acoustic artists that I’ve seen at open mics and stuff.
What’s it really like touring? It’s great, you don’t sleep much and you eat rubbish but you get to play music every night. It’s the dream!

What’s your favourite city/town/venue to play?

Urm, I’ve played Shepherd’s Bush [Empire] in London once and that’s very special.

What’s your ideal festival line-up?

Michael Jackson, Kanye West (but Kanye from 10 years ago), Slipknot, Bombay Bicycle Club, Biffy Clyro, Ben Howard, Beyoncé and a bunch more.

Tell us a tour story…

I’m really boring to be honest, haha. Honestly can’t think of anything that’ll excite you.

What has been your biggest achievement of the year?

Of 2013? I think this tour has been very successful, we’ve been to new cities and there’s been a sizeable crowd so I’m proud of that.

What was the worst piece of advice you were given?

[Unanswered]

What do you do to relax?

Watch films and/or Xbox haha.

What are you reading?

A book that Luke Concannon got me about song writing and stuff, it’s quite interesting.

How about TV, anything good on the box?

The Walking Dead, Friends, Prison Break and anything David Attenborough does.

Do you have a favourite YouTube video?

Anything by YouTube user ‘kyle’, all of his videos are hilarious to me. They don’t seem to be funny to anybody else though.

What website do you visit most? (Discounting email etc)

Probably YouTube, the cat videos alone will keep me there for hours.

What is your favourite…

Record?

Probably Bombay Bicycle Club – I Had the Blues But I Shook Them Loose. Full of great, great songs.

Song?

Bon Iver – ‘Re: Stacks’

Lost classic song?

Not very ‘classic’ but it’s classic for me: Alien Ant Farm – ‘Movies’

Record label?

I’ve got to go with my own, wouldn’t have picked them otherwise!

Who is your favourite current artist?

Matt Corby! He’s just great.

A new artist that you are most excited about?

Gabrielle Aplin, a good friend of mine and a beautiful voice!

What was the last great gig you have seen?

Matt Corby at the Hackney Round Chapel, never been to the venue before but it’s gorgeous!

Worst show?

I supported somebody at the HMV Ritz in Manchester once and it just didn’t work, the crowd laughed at me a bit and I had driven 4 hours to play it. Big shame.

What should we expect from your Irish shows?

A nervous guy singing some songs and trying to be funny, that’s it really haha.

Lewis Watson plays the Academy 2 on Friday 22nd March. Support from Orla Gartland and John Gaughan. Tickets on sale now.
