Top Story: Incoming: Lovers

Portland band Lovers first met in 2002 after a near fatal van explosion brought the three members together. It took a few years for them to actually get round to forming a band but since then they’ve made up for lost time, especially with their debut album Dark Light. The band play Upstairs at Whelan’s tonight, with support from Sleep Thieves.

Who are you and where are you from?
We are Lovers: Kerby Ferris, Emily Kingan, and Carolyn Berk. We’re from Portland, Oregon.

Who are your favourite artists from your hometown?
The people, plants and the animals, among many many others.

What’s it really like touring?
Travelling can be nice, but the days are long and it’s pretty hard work – not much time at all to sight see, eat well or sleep. But we enjoy the world and each other and love a good joke, so it’s not all that bad. Having a really good show can make a hard day worth all the struggle. We can safely say that every show has some great quality, be it a great performance, great sound, the people we meet, an interesting conversation…

What’s your favourite city/town/venue to play?
New York is always a great city to play in. We have lots of friends and family there.

What’s your ideal festival line-up?
Austra, Bon Iver, Light Asylum, MEN, Fleet Foxes, Lovers.

Tell us a tour story…
Three Lesbians walk into a truck stop. One of them buys a pair of nail-clippers. End of Joke.

What do you do to relax?
Have a cup of tea and play guitar or take a stroll around the neighborhood. Harvest herbs with magical healing and balancing properties, go on a run, install Linux, do yoga.

Go Tell It On The Mountain by James Baldwin
Born to Run by Christopher McDougall
Without a Net – anthology by Michelle Tea
Awakening the Planetary Mind: Beyond the Trauma of the Past to a New Era of Creativity by Barbara Hand Clow

How about TV, anything good on the box?
We like Parks and Recreation OK.

What’s the last thing you bought online?
Airplane tickets. Power converter for our European tour. A book about how to build tiny houses.

Who would you most like to collaborate with if you got the chance?
Kanye. Austra

What is the worst cover your band has ever performed?
We’ve only ever covered our own songs I guess.

Have you ever trashed your equipment? When and why?
Not on purpose. We are devoted animists.
