Top Story: Incoming: The Necks

It’s with much anticipation that Australian experimentalists The Necks play Whelan’s in Dublin on Saturday night. Known for their improvisational performances, the trio layer jazz piano, double bass and drums – pushing each instrument to its limit.

Who are you and where are you from?

I am Tony Buck from Australian trio The Necks. I am from Sydney, Australia but I don’t live there anymore.

Who are your favourite artists from your hometown?

Probably Max Dupain, Michael Johnson, Brett Whiteley and Anne Zahalka, who are all from Sydney, I believe.

What’s it really like touring?

It’s really exciting, exhausting, enriching and energising.

What’s your favourite city/town/venue to play?

Probably the Sydney Opera House, in Sydney Australia… a home game. !

What’s your ideal festival line-up?

Nah. You wouldn’t believe it if I told it.

What has been your biggest achievement of the last year?

Having The Necks album Aether is included in the Australian official national sound archive. The National Registry of Recorded Sound is part of the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia’s Sounds of Australia program to promote and celebrate the nation’s sound heritage.

What do you do to relax?

Play guitar.

What are you reading?

The Shock Doctrine by Naomi Klein

How about TV, anything good on the box?

Been watching series a lot. Mad Men and Breaking Bad are the top two for sure.

What’s the last thing you bought online?

A plane ticket.

Who would you most like to collaborate with if you got the chance?

Any of the people involved in the festival above.

What is the worst cover your band has ever performed?

I tried to do the Nirvana Nevermind cover once but I swallowed too much water. WE’VE NEVER TRIED A COVER AS A BAND.

Have you ever trashed your equipment? When and why?

I once played drums underwater and things got soggy. I did it because I was paid to.
