Who are you and where are you from?
Hello! VANN MUSIC, Dublin.
Who are your favorite artists from home?
Oooh, tough choice, so, so many great Irish artists out there at the moment. We do love a bit of Le Galaxie, the Dead Heavies, Lethal Dialect.
What’s it really like touring?
Four guys plus crew in a van fighting over what tunes get played on the radio. Everyone is a DJ! For the most part of it, though, it’s great fun – nothing like the roar of the crowd to bring you back to life after sitting in a van all day
What’s your favourite city/town/venue to play?
Dublin. A home crowd is a beautiful thing. Although when we played Cork in the summer at Indiependence, the crowd went nuts, singing the songs back to us!
What’s your ideal festival line-up?
Prince, U2, Phoenix, Kate Bush, Arcade Fire, TEED, NIN, Fred Falke, Hot Chip, AC/DC, Jessie Ware, M83. We’d bring Curtis Mayfield back from the dead, and we’d ask LCD to reform.
Tell us a tour story…
On the first night of our tour earlier in the summer, we got to shoot an air-rifle at cans in a field. It was very competitive. We all know not to cross [guitarist] Phil as he is lethal with rifle, never missed a shot. We looked over our shoulders a lot after the competition.
What has been your biggest achievement of the year?
It would be a toss-up between headlining the Woodlands Stage at Longitude or the release of our debut EP, Electro Shock Dreams
What was the worst piece of advice you were given?
“Sure, it’ll be grand…”
What do you do to relax?
First some reading and then on to indulge in boxing’s greatest fights.
What are you reading?
Ham on Rye by Charles Bukowski.
How about TV, anything good on the box?
House of Cards, truly excellent writing followed up with acting to match it. Both Kevin Spacey & Robin Wright are majestic.
Do you have a favourite YouTube video?
Hands down it would have to be “House Proud Husky”. One of the funniest things known to man on a video
What website do you visit most? (discounting email, etc.)
Apart from NME and Pitchfork, it would be Bleacher Report for updates on boxing results and upcoming bouts.
What is your favourite…
Marvin Gaye’s What’s Going On.
Talking Heads ‘This Must Be the Place’.
Lost classic song?
Patience & Prudence ‘Tonight You Belong to Me’.
We are a 100% independent band.
Who is your favourite current artist?
A new artist that you are most excited about?
What was the last great gig you have seen?
David Byrne & St Vincent at Electric Picnic was mind blowing.
Saw Shane MacGowan play one night…
What should we expect from your Irish shows?
A lot of dancing.
VANN MUSIC perform at Whelan’s tonight (1st November). Tickets (€11) are available here.
