Who are you and where are you from?
We’re Lily & Madeleine, sisters and musicians from Indianapolis, Indiana.
Who are your favorite artists from home?
M: We really love the music of our friend Ryan of the band Son Lux. He just released a new album/soundtrack and it’s so beautiful.
Lily: Also, there’s a band called Margot and the Nuclear So-and-So’s from Indianapolis and they are amazing.
What’s it really like touring?
M: It’s great! This is the first tour we’ve done without our mom. We miss her but we’re feeling a lot more independent.
L: Touring is exhausting but so fun! I think what’s most important is eating well and sleeping well. If you’re feeling good then performing every night isn’t hard.
What’s your favourite city/town/venue to play?
M: I like playing in London. The audiences are very nice and attentive there. Plus the city is super cool!
L: I like playing in Chicago because we both have lots of friends there. The shows are just like a party!
What’s your ideal festival line-up?
L: Well my music taste is kind of all over the place lately so I’m not sure these artists would flow together perfectly…but I would pick the Black Keys, Arcade Fire, Childish Gambino, Son Lux, and Beyonce in no particular order.
Tell us a tour story…
M: We recently played in West Virginia. It was the first show of the tour and we expected a big crowd but we didn’t expect it to be so rowdy. People were jumping on stage and dancing during another band’s set! I’m sure most of the crowd was drunk. It was a strange night, haha!
What has been your biggest achievement of the year?
M: Being listed on Billboard’s Up and Coming chart was really neat.
L: It might not seem like an achievement to anyone else, but I’m really proud of the way my perspective has changed. I feel like a much more positive and inspired person.
What was the worst piece of advice you were given?
L: Do what you’re told, no questions asked. Especially in our line of work, if we’re not coming from a genuine place within ourselves then our music becomes fake. I like challenges but I never want to misrepresent myself or do something I don’t want to do.
What do you do to relax?
M: I run a lot and drink tea. I try to remind myself that where I am in this moment is completely valid and that I can control how I experience each situation.
L: I listen to music. If someone is stressing me out, then I listen to aggressive rap or loud rock and it’s like a distraction. It relaxes me at least haha
What are you reading?
M: A friend I met in New York recommended the book The Art of Loving by Erich Fromm so I picked it up at a bookstore in Philadelphia. It’s very interesting.
L: “Psychology and You”.
How about TV, anything good on the box?
M: We LOVE tv. Our favorite shows right now are Parks and Recreation and Nashville.
L: I’ve been watching Key and Peele lately and it’s so funny. Comedy is probably my favorite genre as far as TV goes.
Do you have a favourite YouTube video?
L: I don’t really have a favorite specific video, but my favorite thing to watch on YouTube is sessions and interviews with my favorite artists, especially in the earlier days of their careers.
What website do you visit most?
M: I visit Facebook a lot to keep up with our band page. But for fun I like to visit Rookiemag.com. I love all the writers and their monthly themes.
L: Probably tumblr. I follow some hilarious blogs and I waste so much time there
What is your favourite:
Record? M: ‘Ultraviolence’
L: ‘Because the Internet’
Song?M: ‘Cavalier’ by James Vincent McMorrow
L: ‘The First Days of Spring’ by Noah and the Whale
Record label? M: We really admire Asthmatic Kitty (of course) and Glassnote Records.
Who is your favourite current artist?
M: I’m really loving Temples.
What was the last great gig you have seen?
M: We saw our good friends Time For Three play with a sister band called SHEL with the Indianapolis Symphony a few weeks ago. It was a beautiful show.
L: Shannon Hayden, our lovely tourmate, is the most incredible cellist. Her show always blows me away!
What should we expect from your Irish show?
M: We’re touring with our amazing friend and multi-instrumentalist Shannon Hayden. She opens for us and plays with us during our set. She adds so much to our set.
L: I think we’re gonna have a drummer on this tour too and I’m really excited about that!
