Who are you and where are you from?
My name is Liam, I play in the group Princess. I live in Sallynoggin.
Who are your favorite artists from home?
What’s it really like touring?
I hated it at first, but after the third show I loved it!
What’s your favourite city/town/venue to play?
We played in Berlin, the crowd seem to all be really jumpy, it feels good to have people dancing when you play. I envy DJs for that.
What’s your ideal festival line-up?
Hmm… What about Silver Apples in the afternoon, Kendrick Lamar in the evening. Then CAN and Surgeon on two different stages playing all night. And Sunn o))) somewhere in there too. Then some ’60’s Coltrane, when he went mad. And finally, John Cooper Clark word-battling Rimbaud in the Poetry tent to close the event. Hey that rhymes..
What has been your biggest achievement of the year?
We did our first tour which was exciting, and we have a really solid band now. I think that’s the biggest achievement. Everyone flows together well and we really push the music live. Plus we all have the same sense of humour.
What was the worst piece of advice you were given?
“Hey man, you should go bear tipping!” No that didn’t happen, but it sounds like bad advice.
What do you do to relax?
I like reading about space and time, and I’m a pretty obsessive Wikipedia reader. I like to draw but I’m not any good. I did the weird Tree person on the back of our single cover.
What are you reading?
I’ve been reading Under The Skin for Months but I keep freaking myself out so I stop. Then I start again. I’ll finish it some day. And I’m always mining from Rimbaud. I have two books of his stuff.
How about TV, anything good on the box?
I like Archer a lot, then I found this Charlie Parker Documentary that I liked. Also Wire live in Holland in ’79, but this is all on youtube, I don’t have a tele. My dad does.
Do you have a favourite YouTube video?
What website do you visit most?
Either watchcartoonsonline, Space.com or Wikipedia. Even if it’s not true I just like the story.
What is your favourite:
Right now I like To Pimp a Butterfly, A Shape of Jazz to come by Ornette Coleman, Soused by Scott Walker/Sunn o))) and Silver Apples first record.
Lost classic song?
‘Baby I Love You’ by the Ronnettes. The way it bounces in. So good.
When I was younger I would have said like Italy records because they put out the first White Stripes Stuff. Now I don’t know. Actually I love Kranky! Deerhunter and Tim Hecker and Grouper, love it.
Who is your favourite current artist?
Does Portishead count? That Sunn o)))/Scott Walker thing is so good. But Kendrick’s new one… I was proper high walking to the bus listening to it the other day.
A new artist that you are most excited about?
I like Girlpool, they sound like they could have been on the Mallrats soundtrack, but I dunno.
What was the last great gig you have seen?
I don’t remember…
No show is bad, just badly played.
What should we expect from your Irish shows?
I’ve been told that we’re extremely loud, so I like that. We’re starting to find a way to tangle the songs. I think we just want to keep playing and get better and better over the year. Queue the cheesy inspirational music!
Princess will play at Chromatic at The Woodworkers, Belfast, this Saturday, April 11th, and as always, it’s absolutely free. Attendance is highly recommended.
