After a busy year gigging, recording and moving house, State’s Face of 2010 cover star Patrick Kelleher is warming up (sorry, couldn’t resist) for the release of You Look Colder, a collection of remixes from his debut album You Look Cold – with remixes from the likes of Jape, David Kitt, Skinny Wolves and fellow State Social #3 guest DJ Catscars. But before all that, Patrick Kelleher brings his ‘mid-fast tempo’ choices to this month’s State. Patrick believes there’s a time and a place for Phil Collins. No, really. And he doesn’t mean your aunt’s tape collection.
What are you expecting from the State Social?
What should we expect from you?
I am planning to start with Doo Wop, Rockabilly, 50s and 60s sounding stuff from my modest vinyl collection, which I bought mostly in charity shops. But I will probably be unable to resist bringing a little Devo and a couple of auld disco tunes for good measure. I will play it by ear I think.
What is your style of DJing?
Wobbly-fingered. I haven’t DJed much except in house parties, so hopefully I can figure out how to work the decks.
Can you give us a teaser from your set?
Ryan Paris -Dolce Vita’
What is your guaranteed floor filler?
Anthea & Donna -Uptown Top Ranking’
If no one is dancing, what will you do?
Ever cleared a dancefloor?
I’m sure I have, but I probably just called them all philistines and demanded to have some booze. There is a time and a place for Phil Collins.
Most embarrassing record in your collection?
Junie Morrison -Techno-Fréqs’
Mary, Derek and Dervla.
Most pretentious record you own?
Not sure but I’m not mad about the new-ish Animal Collective Fall Be Kind EP. Although their recordings are normally fantastic.
First single and album you ever bought?
Single – Mollella Ft. The Outhere Brothers -If You Wanna Party’
Album – The Corrs -Forgiven, Not Forgotten’
Last single and album you bought?
Single – PiL -This is Not a Love Song’
Album – Various Artists -The Singing Detective BBC Series OST’
If electronia and acoustica were in a fight, who would win?
Let’s say first day of the tournament, Group A: Willie Nelson vs. Florian Schneider of Kraftwerk… I’d probably go for Schneider. Nelson has the upper body strength but could he take a minimoog to the jaw?
How did the idea for remixing You Look Cold come about? How did you pick collaborators?
It was Patrick Henry from Osaka Record’s idea, he had a few people he wanted to ask, and I asked the rest. They are all just people who we kind of knew would do a good job, some we met through music and others I was friends with already.
Are you working on any new material?
Yes, but slowly.
Fred Astaire -They Can’t Take That Away From Me’.
Patrick Kelleher’s You Look Colder CD is released on Osaka Records on 16 April 2010.
The State Social #3 takes place on Wednesday, 31 March in our new home The Mezz in Twisted Pepper, Abbey Street, Dublin 1. Featuring DJ sets from Patrick Kelleher, Catscars, Nialler9 and Loreana Rushe. From 11pm. Free entry.
