Who are you and where are you from?
We are The Amazons and we are from sunny sunny Reading.
Who are your favourite artists from home?
From Reading, Sundara Karma are great. From the UK generally we like Cupids, who’re out on tour with us this month.
What’s it really like touring?
It’s fun, it’s hard, it’s boring, it’s exciting, it’s empowering, it’s humbling. It’s an adventure, with all the highs and lows. Lots of late nights, early mornings. The main thing you worry about is staying healthy, soon as someone gets ill, it all falls apart.
What’s your favourite city/town/venue to play?
Reading is home so it’s always fun to play. Both times we’ve played Dublin have been amazing. First at the Olympia Theatre then Whelan’s. Very different experiences but both very fun.
What’s your ideal festival line-up?
We saw an orchestra do Bowie covers at Secret Garden Party and it was amazing so they’d open the festival. Then Ryan Adams, The Kills, Iggy Pop, with Queens of the Stone Age headlining.
What has been your biggest achievement of the year?
Only in February so far, I think releasing our single ‘Black Magic’ was a big moment for us. That one has been a long time coming.
What was the worst piece of advice you were given?
I have no idea. That’s exactly the kind of stuff you delete from your mind to free up space.
What do you do to relax?
Read, write music, play Fifa.
What are you reading?
Civilisation by Nial Ferguson. It’s a non-fiction that talks about the West’s rise to global dominance from the 13th century to now.
How about TV, anything good on the box?
I recently finished It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia and it was life changing. There is nothing better.
Do you have a favourite YouTube video?
Anything with Carl Sagan in.
What website do you visit most?
Probably Instagram if that counts. We’re slaves man.
What is your favourite:
Arcade Fire – The Suburbs
The Verve – ‘Bittersweet Symphony’
Lost classic song?
Iggy Pop – ‘Tonight’
Fiction Records of course!
Who is your favourite current artist?
Ryan Adams. His new album, Prisoner, is great.
A new artist that you are most excited about?
Maggie Rogers. Saw her in London the other night and she was electric.
What was the last great gig you have seen?
Iggy Pop at the Royal Albert Hall. He played with his supergroup backing of Arctic Monkeys and Queens of the Stone Age.
The first show we played with Josef actually. I forgot words, broke strings etc. Thankfully it’s never been worse than that.
What should we expect from your Irish shows?
We love Rock and Roll shows that are exciting, visceral, unpredictable. If people take that from one of our shows, we’re doing something right.
