Might Be Giants: Might Be Giants – Ophelia

When State saw Ophelia perform alongside Afrobeat legend Tony Allen at last weekend’s Festival Of World Cultures, we weren’t the only one who were deeply impressed – with Allen himself declaring his admiration for the Dublin based rapper and singer. Her appearance both as part of Afronova and with her own collaborators Redsquare made total sense for Ophelia is a performer whose roots extend beyond the obvious into the worlds of jazz, world and soul. Having performed alongside such home grown acts as Super Extra Bonus Party, RSAG, The Immediate and Ham Sandwich, Opheila’s reputation has been cemented by slots with the likes of Ice Cube and Pete Rock. With DJ Moschops supplying the beats and Redsquare fleshing out the sound with brass and world rhythms, Ophelia herself combines an infectious energy with a rich soul voice and inner city Dublin grit. Not the most obvious of new Irish artists this year but maybe one of the best.
