As part of a series of events that bring the best of global urban music to Dublin, Groovalizacion Radio and Instituto Cervantes Dublin in association with Havana Club ‘The Authentic Cuban Rum’ are glad to announce the coming of Cuban artist Kumar, recently featuring on Gilles Peterson’s “Havana Cultura” album, for a unique concert at the brand new venue Grand Social.

Kumar born and raised in Havana, Cuba, started his career in 1998 writing and performing his own hip-hop before advancing into producing rap. In 2004 along with Telmary Diaz he recorded the song “No se vuleve atrás” which was included in the soundtrack of the movie Habana Blues by director Benito Zambrano and went on to win a Goya award for best soundtrack. That same year the song “Ves”, featuring Telmary, was nominated for three awards in the Cuban video festival Premios Lucas.

In 2007 Kumar relocated to Spain where he was able to complete the final mixing of the album “Película de Barrio” under the independent label Diquela Records/Universal. This year Kumar featured on “Gilles Peterson Presents Havana Cultura – New Cuba Sound” double cd produced by legendary Cuban pianist Roberto Fonseca and BBC presenter and international man of music Gilles Peterson on behalf of Havana Club.

It is only fitting that Havana Club have come on board to co sponsor this event further enhancing the experience of the evening. Havana Club is the authentic Cuban rum & closely entwined with the Cuban culture and Cubans are very proud of what has become a true national icon. They consider it as one of the best Cuban ambassadors worldwide. All rums within the Havana Club range are aged adding to the unmistakably irresistible taste.

Without evading his love for funk music, Cuban folklore or Afro Latin roots, his compositions follow the steps of hip-hop. With a profound reflection on human being and modern society, his music combines the sound from his native Cuba and the influence of other sonorities from various parts of the world, which this charismatic artist encountered in Barcelona. Expect an evening of highly danceable musical hip-hop charged with Cuban flavors simultaneously familiar yet very fresh.

Turntablist DJ Panko from notorious Barcelona band, Ojos de Brujo, will then join in to throw some infectious mestizo sounds until 3am. DJ Panko is one of the founders of Ojos de Brujo. Flamenco infused hip-hop has been there trade name since 1998 and the band went on to win amongst others, the BBC Radio 3 world music award for Europe in 2004.
