Always bringing to Dublin the most unexpected and daring acts from around the world, Groovalizacion Radio does it again. This time it is London band los Chinches, that will cause a tremor throughout town with the eclectic sounds of their chicha music as they take the stage on Saturday the 19th of March at the Mercantile. This 8-member strong band brings together a dynamic blend of Peruvian percussionists and London bred guitar and keyboard players, creating their own music and a unique sound that combines the psychedelic vibes of Peruvian cumbia with a rock’n’roll spirit native to London. Continuing with the tropical mood, DJ Cal Jader (London) will get behind the decks to throw the freshest Latin beats combining classic rhythms with contemporary cutting edge dance floor and urban beats.

So what is chicha music? Think tropical surf rock meets psychedelic Amazon cumbia and you’ve got chicha. When rock’n’roll became a worldwide phenomenon in the 60’s, people went electric on a global scale, epitomising all that is modern. Meanwhile, back in the Peruvian Amazon, musicians had been soaking up more local rhythms from Colombia, Brazil, integrating them with indigenous Andean and Amazonian folklore. So when rock’n’roll found its way to this part of the world they happily embraced the genre to create one of the most cosmopolitan style of music ever heard.

Always supportive of the Latin music scene in Ireland, Havana Club have come on board to sponsor this event further enhancing the experience of the evening. Havana Club is the authentic Cuban rum & closely entwined with the Latin culture served throughout the whole South American continent. All rums within the Havana Club range are aged adding to the unmistakably irresistible taste.

After a fortuitous journey to Peru, London born guitarist Gareth Finnegan returned to the UK with the tropical sounds of cumbia etched in his mind. Searching for a way to bring to life the rhythms and sounds he had heard, he set about bringing together a diverse mix of individuals, thus los Chinches was formed. Within a short space of time they began developing a reputation as a truly unique live experience. Some blistering live performances followed at renowned venues. They have also featured at many of the UK’s top festivals including Glastonbury and WOMAD 2010.

Los Chinches have just finished recording their debut album, a collection of 11 original tracks, and 2011 sees the band continuing to blaze a trail with the sounds and colours of a groove that rocked the Amazon in the 60’s and has recently been brought back into fashion by labels like Barbes Records and their acclaimed compilations “The Roots of Chicha” .

Cal Jader is the head of London’s Movimientos and is at the forefront of the alternative underground scene in the UK. He has played at festivals across the UK, DJing around the world from Istanbul to Llubjana, Copenhagen and Mexico City, sharing the bill with Manu Chao, Ska Cubano, Chocquibtown, Los De Abajo and Novalima amongst others.
