Joanna Newsom’s songs are rolled with passion, playfulness, history, humor, journal entries — everything she can get in there without sacrificing musicality. This occasionally demands a rewiring of the accepted lines of song structure, but that’s a wheel that’s been reinflated before. Joanna delights in her role as singer-songwriter; as such she’s inclined to curve perspectives, singing not just of herself and her feelings but embodying others’, some of whom she knows and some of whom she may know wherefore of they speak. Listeners, we ask, who is singing, and to whom? There’s a diversity of relations here, life measured through stimulating dialog and a disconcerting directness of inquest.

Through the course of her current album Have One On Me’s eighteen songs, Joanna visits ditties, weepies, court dances, rump-bumpers, epics and moments of panavision fantasia upon us. Once you’re done digging through this lot, another few years will have passed and it’ll be time for another new one.

Joining Joanna @the Park are special guests Bert Jansch and James Vincent McMorrow

Bert Jansch, legendary songwriter and guitarist, is widely acknowledged as one of the most influential musicians of all time. Since the mid 1960s generation after generation have been held spellbound by his extraordinary ground-breaking acoustic guitar playing and classic emotive songs. Jimmy Page, Neil Young, Nick Drake, Johnny Marr, Bernard Butler and Beth Orton have all been devotees, and further generations, led by Devendra Banhart and Pete Doherty, are still discovering Jansch for themselves.

James Vincent McMorrow, fresh from two amazing sold out shows at Dublin’s Pepper Canister Church, released his Gold selling debut record, Early in the Morning, to widespread critical acclaim last year. The album is a stunning collection of songs recorded over 5 months in an isolated house by the sea, and is a completely self recorded and played affair, filled with beguiling and vivid stories, fables that move from a whisper in your ear to a mountainous crescendo in the space of a song, all the while retaining the environment and sentiment in which they were formed. Early In The Morning was nominated for the Choice Music Prize earlier this year.
