The Rags – Whelan’s, Dublin

THE RAGS CELEBRATE DEBUT ALBUM RELEASE WITH WHELANS SHOW

The Rags will celebrate the long-awaited release of their debut album with a special hometown show in Whelans Dublin on Saturday 29th May. Tickets will be €15 on sale next Monday March 1st @ 9am through Ticketmaster and other usual outlets nationwide. Booking Line: 0818 719 300.

Led through various incarnations by vocalist and songwriter Daniel Anderson, The Rags have built a passionately devoted following on home shores for their sophisticated blend of melodically inventive guitar-pop and razor-sharp lyrical expressiveness.

Announcing their arrival on the scene with a succession of rapturously received EP’s and singles, The Rags return from an extended spell in the recording studio with 12 brand new Anderson-penned tracks that provide the foundation for a remarkable modern pop record. -A National Light’ will be released on May 21st 2010.

Whether it’s the album’s Joyce-sampling, Yeats-referencing title track, replete with vivid imagery of returning literary heroes recoiling at “smut magazines and souls as black as sin” or the sordid conspiracies observed amid the swirling web of Smiths-esque guitar hooks and throbbing drumbeats of -A Murderous Chant’, the feelings and sentiments expressed on these tracks are underpinned by a unifying sense of purpose.

From the deceptively danceable, Wildean-themed elaboration on superficiality -A Mirror To A Woman (Is A Bullet In A Gun)- to the quiet desperation at the heart of the delicately psychedelic -Owner Of A Loveless Life’, -A National Light’ laments the spirit-crushing travails of modernity while shining a benevolent beam of consolation on us all.

‘Quite simply the best new Irish act in years’
Stuart Bailie – BBC Radio

‘It’s very simple – they’ve got it. Can’t wait for the album’
Ian Dempsey – Today FM

‘If the rest of the album matches what I’ve heard so far – The Rags will have delivered an album of definite class.’
Eamon Carr, Evening Herald
