Real Estate’s sound was born on the New Jersey shores when front man Martin Courtney returned from college in Washington State with a fresh batch of songs ready to be made with his old band mates, bassist Alex Bleeker and guitarist Matthew Mondanile whom he had been playing with before leaving NJ.

Having grown up playing shows with friends from Vivian Girls and Titus Andronicus, the members of Real Estate have played together in a variety of incarnations since their middle school years in Ridgewood, NJ but it was only upon Courtney’s return to the scene, accompanied by new songs he wrote during his time away, that gave them the impetus to form a band proper and Real Estate was born.

They set about recording these and began putting out a series of 7’s/mp3’s that slowly accumulated until they finally prepared their debut, self-titled, LP which was signed up to the New York label of the moment, Mexican Summer and was released late last year. The album has gained huge support from sites such as Pitchfork/Stereogum, which has helped propel the band into the spotlight.
Real Estate’s songs reflect influences from Paul Mccartney and the Grateful Dead to the Clean and New Jersey’s own Yo La Tengo and The Feelies, all the while crafting unique pop songs about what they know: growing up in suburbs and hanging by the shore.
