Chairlift / Tidal District – Academy 2, Dublin

The Academy 2 is dark and very loud. New York’s Chairlift are in the middle of a mini-European tour and bringing their brand of arty indieness to Dublin. Local Dubliners, Tidal District, open things with a short set packed with two singers, a violin and a pretty impressive mohawk amongst other things. They have a hypnotic alternative sound that seems to go down really well with the compact crowd.

Chairlift are a bit more alternative than the catchy pop of the iPod promoting ‘Bruises’ might have you believe. Feist mixed with the quirkiness and vocal characteristics of Bat for Lashes would be a good place to start. Caroline Polachek, the singer and synth player has a great live voice and claims between songs to always enjoying coming to Ireland. The only problem is that Chairlift need to come up with a few more tunes of the calibre of ‘Bruises’ to ensure that those return visits are to more sizeable crowds.
