An Taobh Tuathail celebrates ten years

An Taobh Tuathail will celebrate 10 years on air with a gig in the Róisín Dubh in Galway on Friday 1 May featuring Halfset, Tiny Magnetic Pets and Lost Chord. The gig will be broadcast live on RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta and will mark the day 10 years ago when Cian Ó Cíobháin first presented the underground music show which has since continued to go from strength to strength under his stewardship.

Back in 1999 Ó Cíobháin convinced the management of Raidió na Gaeltachta that his idea for an underground music show was a good one, and 10 years later he is the presenter of a very successful programme with a loyal following all over the world. An Taobh Tuathail means the other side, and Cian aims to bring listeners the type of music that they will not hear on other radio stations. His show has been described by some as a frontier show – listeners are likely to hear new tracks on An Taobh Tuathail many weeks, or months even, before they hear them elsewhere.

Ó Cíobháin constantly strives to bring listeners the best in new underground music, and as his own tastes change and develop, so too does the music heard on the show, a fact that he feels reflects the creative nature of music. The programme is broadcast from 23.00 – 01.00 Monday – Friday as part of the Anocht fm slot on RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta with the shows earlier in the week reflective in mood – drawing on electronica, dream-pop, alt-folk, post-rock, soundtracks and jazz – and shows towards the end of the week devoted to electronic dancefloor music, predominantly house and techno which Cian also plays at clubs around Ireland.
