Bond composer John Barry has died

John Barry, the English film score composer best known for his Bond music has died aged 77. Barry scored 11 soundtracks for the Bond franchise as well as scores for Born Free, Out of Africa and Dances with Wolves – he worked on over 70 feature films in total.

His career spanned from from Beat Girl in 1960 to Enigma in 2001, picking up five Oscars along the way and was nominated for a further two more. His influence was widespread including fellow Bond composer and record producer David Arnold who said “I am profoundly saddened by the news but profoundly thankful for everything he did for music and for me personally.”

  • He was a great composer and he will be greatly missed and forever remembered for his many awesome film scores. Some of my favorite pieces from him are “Dances with Wolves”, “Out of Africa”, and “Somewhere in Time”. He wrote music that both touched and thrilled us. What a talented man.

  • The melody for “You Only Live Twice” is one of my favorite things ever and it’s even more gorgeous without Nancy Sinatra on “Mountains and Sunsets.” I’m blown away every time I listen to it.
