Mike Starr, former bass player with Alice In Chains, has been found dead at his home in Salt Lake City. Starr had endured a long battle with drug addiction, which resulted in him leaving the group after the release of Dirt in 1993. He later worked with ex-Black Sabbath singer Ray Gillen on the Sun Red Sun project. In a statement released through their management, the two remaining original members of Alice In Chains, Jerry Cantrell and Sean Kinney, expressed their grief:
“Jerry and Sean are mourning the loss of their friend and ask that the media respect their privacy — and the privacy of Mike’s family — during this difficult time. Their thoughts & prayers are with the Starr family.”
Mike Starr is predeceased by his AIC bandmate Layne Stayley, who passed away in 2002 from an overdose.
