The Galway Arts Festival Big Top gigs kick off with the steller line-up of cult Sahara band Tinariwen and Cape Verde’s new diva Mayra Andrade. Formed out of Gaddafi’s guerrilla training camps in the 80s, the West African band Tinariwen bring the Sahara desert to the world. Tinariwen literally laid down its arms and picked up guitars. This is a chance to catch them before their Electric Picnic performance.
Drawing on traditional Cape Verdean cadences and African, Brazilian and Parisian jazz scenes, Mayra Andrade creates her own acoustic sound. Andrade was the recent winner of best newcomer at the 2008 BBC World Music Awards.
