Incoming – The Subways

Who are you and where are you from?

I am Billy and I am from Hertfordshire in England. I sing and play guitars in a band called The Subways!

Who are your favourite artists from home?

Sex Pistols, Oasis, The Wombats, T-Rex, and Future of the Left!

What’s it really like touring?

It’s the greatest thing in the world. So often I meet folks from other bands who are fed up of touring or are bored/tired of it. I think that’s crazy. I wake up every day and I feel like I’m living my childhood dreams!

What’s your favourite city/town/venue to play?

Anywhere. Give me the sites, the smells, the people – it’s all good!

What’s your ideal festival line-up?

Bringing back Hendrix and Cobain from the dead would be a start. Foo Fighters, The Bronx, early-era Madonna and The Clash!

What has been your biggest achievement of the year?

Giving up drinking. I feel like a kid again. The world is amazing!

What was the worst piece of advice you were given?

“Think of the band in terms of a business plan”. No way. Never. Best way to destroy your soul is to think about money over living.

What do you do to relax?

Reading. I have a fascination with classical literature and books in general. Great to indulge in, but lugging all those books around with me on tour (I don’t do Kindles) is a struggle on the back muscles.

What are you reading?

Currently on the table with me I have Plath’s Ariel, Larkin’s The Whitsun Weddings, Cervantes’s Don Quixote, and a voluminous text called Modern Literary Theory.

How about TV, anything good on the box?

Still Game. I’ve only just found out about it, and I’m in comedy heaven right now.

Do you have a favourite YouTube video?

I seem to be going back to the Arsenal victory over Barcelona a couple of seasons ago at the Emirates. Exquisite moments!

What website do you visit most? (discounting email etc)

BBC Score Centre. Obsessed with checking the football scores. I really want to win the band’s fantasy football league this season.

What is your favourite:

record? – Future of the Left, Curses

Song? – Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, ‘The Tracks of My Tears’

Lost classic song? – Anything by Rivals Schools. Underrated by light years.

Record label? – Infectious. Korda Marshall was a genius.

Who is your favourite current artist?

Bleech. Female-fronted grunge masterclass.

A new artist that you are most excited about?

Young Aviators. Northern Irish superstars in the making.

What was the last great gig you have seen?

Mew in Glasgow, 2012. Yes, I cried. Stupendous.

Worst show?

As well as trying to make a habit of no longer bad-mouthing fellow artists, I also cannot remember a show I didn’t enjoy on some level.

What should we expect from your Irish shows?

Fast, furious and lots of smiles. And hopefully a stage-dive or two.
