Mindfield festival – State’s picks

Billed as an “international festival of ideas”, MIndfield returns to Dublin this weekend from Friday to Sunday and features all manner of talks and panels centered around the themes of culture, politics, inspiration and technology.

There are 60 events on over three days. Most cost €10 for entry. Some are free. A full festival pass is €69.

We’ve picked out some of our highlights:

Friday

The Word: Poetry and Slam – Mindfield Pavilion (8–9.30pm)

Hosted by Marty Mulligan with The Brownbread Mix, Glór Sessions and Tonguebox, featuring Raven, Cah 44, Erin Fornoff, Kalle Ryan, Enda Roche, Stephen James Smith and special guests. €10

Remix : Culture Hacking – Ignition Stage (8-9.30pm)

Hosted by Kevin Flanagan with Michel Bauwens (philosopher, P2P Foundation), Benjamin Gaulon (artist, Recyclism), Darius Whelan (Creative Commons Ireland) and Loughlin McSweeney (Choicecuts.com/Fundit.ie). Free event.

Saturday

Living for the City: Designing a Fairer Dublin with Pivot Dublin 2014 – Mindfield Pavilion (12-1pm)

Hosted by Dylan Haskins, with Simon Kelly (Breakfast with Anglo), Niamh Hourigan (UCC), Conor Skehan (IIEA, Dublin at the Crossroads). €10

Games Island: Is Gaming Technology or Culture? – Mindfield Pavilion (3pm-4pm)

Hosted by Paul Hayes (Beachhut PR) with Phil Campbell (former creative director EA), Dylan Collins (Gruupy), Barry O’Neill (Interactive Games Association) and Willie White (Project Arts Centre). €10

The ireland : iceland project presents: Crisis/ Kreppa: The Mother of Invention – Mindfield Pavilion (4.15pm-5.45pm)

Hosted by Kathy Scott (the ireland : iceland Project) with Valgeir Sigursson (Bedroom Community), Bjarni Snaebjorn (The Anthill / National Assembly) Smari McCarthy (Icelandic Modern Media Initiative) and David Hayes ( Ministry of Ideas Ireland ). €10

Publish and Perish? The Future for Printed Media – Arts Council Literary Stage (7–8.15 pm)

Featuring Declan Meade (The Stinging Fly), Brendan Barrington (The Dublin Review and Penguin Ireland) and John Ryan (Broadsheet.ie). €10

Ignite! – Mindfield Pavilion (8-9:30pm)

The worldwide phenomenon: Ten speakers, 20 slides each and 5 minutes to blow your mind. Expect great ideas, entertaining insights and brilliantly concise explanations of everything from trees to genetics; technology to architecture. €10

Sunday

Nathan Rabin : My Year of Flops and other Tales – Mindfield Pavilion (4pm)

The acclaimed author and head writer for The Onion and the AV Club explores the interconnectedness of failure and success. €10

Banter: The Death of Pop Culture – Ignition Stage (4.15–5.45pm)

Hosted by Jim Carroll with Nathan Rabin, Todd Zuniga and Una Mullally. €10

MindField Film Panel – Ignition Stage (6-7.30pm)

Featuring Conor Horgan and guests. Free event.

MindField Finale Show – Mindfield Pavilion

8–9 pm ireland : iceland Project presents: Valgeir Siggurdson, Puzzle Muteson and Trevor Knight.
9–10 pm MindField Finale featuring the best ideas of the weekend with the Leviathan Arkestra.
