MP3: She & Him – Why Do you Let Me Stay Here?

She & Him

A rather excrutiating Scarlett Johansson version of Tom Waits’ ‘Anywhere I Lay My Head’ popped up online yesterday in which Scarlett sounds like a dying dog barking through its last moments of death. In contrast, fellow actress Zooey Deschanel’s turn alongside M. Ward as the “she” in She & Him is firstly – musical and secondly – a success.

By focusing on pop and country songs which have an olden forgotten glow to them, the duo have succeeded in creating a passage of songs which hark back to their own influences. Deschanel’s voice is emotive and convincing (fitting for an actress) with a distinct twang.

Despite the desire to cast off the album as an mentor/vanity project for the pair, Deschanel wrote the songs and Ward produced. The result is Volume One, an album of new golden oldies.

  • she has a great voice, but i think she trained as a singer before she became an actress
    good stuff

  • Good stuff…

    Nice photo too…

  • Clockwork Rob

I thought the Johannson track was actually pretty decent. It’s all about Dave Sitek’s (TV on the Radio) production. Genius.

  • “The Go-Getter” film featuring songs by Zooey and M. Ward is finally coming out in select cities on June 6.
