Following one of the defining records of the decade is no easy task, so LCD Soundsystem’s follow-up to the 2007masterpiece Sound of Silver has big dancing shoes to fill. Album number three from James Murphy might be some months away, but he’s just dropped the tantalising new single -Bye Bye Bayou’.
A slithery mid-tempo disco workout, Murphy rushed it out on 20,000 downloads when it was leaked a few weeks ago. Needless to say the downloads were snapped up quicker than a double cowbell tap. A cover of the 1981 cult classic from Suicide’s Alan Vega, the original’s rockabilly beat and slightly unhinged vocals have been reeled in for a !!!-style groove with a loose pulsing bassline, plenty of handclaps and swirly dub effects. It may be a standalone single but it’s a taster for fans awaiting LCD’s new record, due in 2010 – it seems Murphy can do no wrong. Oh and check out the helicopter samples – remixers will have a field day.
-Bye Bye Bayou’ gets a 12-inch release for Record Store Day this Saturday, November 7, and is available for download on November 24.
