New Wild Beasts – ‘Wanderlust’

It has been nearly three years since Smother and just over two since Wild Beasts last played in Ireland at Other Voices 2011 (pictured above), and it is really great to hear some new material from Kendal’s finest. ‘Wanderlust’ finds the band in fine form and boasting a greater electronic tinge this time around. Otherwise, it is assuredly a Wild Beasts song – the same blunt masculinity dressed up in dandy indie finery.

As far as kiss-offs go, the climactic “Don’t confuse me with someone who gives a fuck” is appallingly harsh but Hayden Thorpe’s warbling falsetto has a habit of softening his all-too-often brutal words, and given the song’s build, it’s a climax that comes out of leftfield. Ersatz choirs and a softly billowing synth line make up the crux of the track with the only the brutish repetition of Chris Talbot’s drums and an occasional rumble of Tom Fleming’s bass for company, but then that synth starts to give off a warm, analogue glow as Thorpe presents his cold shoulder, making for an enveloping end. It’s good to have them back.
