Fair play to the MN collective for thinking way outside the box this weekend. The Dublin-based dance promoters have secured Detroit maestro Mike Huckaby for two nights — including a special one-off set to mark the birthday of the late great jazz futurist Sun Ra, who would’ve been 97 this year.
As part of MN’s ‘Amen Brother’ offshoot, Huckaby will man the decks tonight in Dublin’s Grand Social, spinning Sun Ra classics from the Arkestra vaults and his own reel-to-reel edits of Sun Ra compositions. To top it off, there’ll be a rare screening of Sun Ra documentaries and the movie Space is the Place. Support tonight is from Fatty Fatty resident GMOS and Sunday Times Soundsystem’s Barry Walsh.
So that’s for starters. Huckaby is heading down the road to the Ormond Wine Bar on the Quays tomorrow night to throw down a spaced-out house set for MN Presents… with a little help from MN residents Damien Waters and Niall Kirk.
Tickets for tonight’s event in the Grand Social are €8 (early bird) or a tenner on the door, and tomorrow’s gig in Ormond Wine Bar are €10 (early bird) or €12 on the door. The lads are offering a €15 weekend ticket for both nights, so get your rollover on. Buy tickets at Resident Advisor.
