The Meteor Music Awards are not happening this year

There will be no Meteor Awards in 2011 it was revealed after Meteor’s Twitter account announced the news:

After 10 rockin’ years, we’ve decided to take a break, and not produce The Meteors in 2011.

No word as yet on whether it’ll be back for 2012. Here’s a look at last year’s awards.

A further word from the organisers:

“Since their inception in 2001, the Meteors have become synonymous with music in Ireland and have celebrated the best of Irish and international music, as well as recognising up and coming home-grown talent. The awards have seen performances from some of the biggest names in the global music industry including Muse, Elton John, Snoop Dogg, The Script, Dizzee Rascal, Kaiser Chiefs, Westlife, Boyzone, Tom Jones, Amy Winehouse and countless others. We wish to take this opportunity to thank all those who have participated.”

  • Sad day for Irish music industry. Maybe this is where IRMA should be taking responsibility for it and not relying on corporate sponsorship to dictate the Irish music scene.

  • Roger

Time for the State awards then 😛

  • A sad day? really? I don’t think the Irish music industry’s lost anything. The Meteors were widely derided and lost all credibility an age ago. Giving an award to Westlife every single year, even when they hadn’t done anything of any note at all that year, being just one of their major flaws.

  • Agree totally with what James said. The Meteor Awards are/were an embarrassment to the Irish music scene.
