Universal Records and Sony buy up EMI

The landscape of the music industry shifted yet again on Friday with the news that EMI had been sold for the second time in just seven months, seeing the company’s two main assets split for the first time. Universal has taken control of the recorded music division, while Sony has bought the publishing company. The move means that the number of major labels is now reduced to three (Warners completing the list) and that, for the first time since 1931, a UK company will not feature.
